visual programming

suffice it to say that i am not the most adept at programing, parts of my brain know when they want to do and well the other parts seem to have better things to do. but today i found 2 very cool tools for people out there like me, i found these in the arduino blog so i have to give the original blogger credit for finding these in the first place i wish i knew who he was but here is the link http://arduino.cc/blog/2010/11/30/draw-your-sketch-scratch-for-arduino/ but from there i was able to find these http://seaside.citilab.eu/scratch i do like this one so far, but i do find it a little limiting in how i am using, i still need to get a few more things straight but for me it is working good, but i do like a little more raw control. but you can use this one today, over the next few days i do plan on using it more. and seeing what i can learn with it. but the one thing i did not like about it too much is that it needs to always be connected to the arduino, i don't like that so much but for now it is a great way for me to learn.

but this one i want to try allot too, it looks like just what i have been waiting for. it looks to be allot like the other one, but i think it will allow me to control the inputs and outputs the way i want. http://arduino.cc/blog/2010/10/05/visual-programming-arduino-modkit-and-the-others/ and here is there main site http://www.modk.it/

this one is still in the middle of testing, but i have signed up for it. i do like what i see allot more on this one, and i dont think it will always need to be connected. that is something that i do need and want.

i would love to know if modkit can import sketches from the arduino SDK if so i am looking forward to seeing how the reprap firmware looks like.

this is a quick screen capture of S4A, so that i could show you.
i was trying to edit that one so that it would have a random spot in it, and i did get it to work,

but for me this is one big blessing, it will mean i can do that much more. so i am happy with it, and i hope a few others out there will find this post useful has well.

over all a very good night for me,

one more order placed

yay one more order placed today for parts.

Today at lunch i placed an order at makergear.com for there operator super back .40mm hybrid. i was hoping to make my own but due to difficulty with sourcing materials and not having the proper tools, i thought this would be the best option. from what i can see on the web allot of people like there setup and i figured i would try it and see how it works for me. but i am also liking the thought of being that much closer to printing too.

i hope in the next week or so i can start testing building and testing a few more of my idea, so i hope i can get my repstrap working here again sooner than later. but i will have to test out my ideas to see what will work for me. but i will see both what i can find and what i can build. though i will say this dose leave me wishing that i had a few more of the tools i need, but this xmas i hope to buy a drill press, and that will go a long way for me too. the other tool that would help me allot is a table saw. so i hope to buy one of them closer to my bday. or at least i hope.

i hope makergear ships on Monday. i am eager to get back to trying to get things working.

i have got my idea down now to find a way to build it.

today i finally got to trying to get my idea down for my repstrap, if i do it right, it will give me all the pieces i need, with little effort, i just need to find a way to get it out on paper.

this is the top and bottom plate.

here i made a middle place y axis it is pretty much just a copy of the top one
but if i can get this idea to work and figure out how to mount my bearing  to it i think this may work, i am going to talk to a local sign shop and see if this would work with anything they have there now. or at the very least i will try to get the files in a format so they could print me out some sort of template to cut with.

but i do think this is a good way to go this way all my holes should be lined up nice and stright, and it is an easy way to mount a few more things i just hope that i can find a way to do it fairly soon,

my only other issue with this is that i need to find a way to attach the bearings i need to it some how

i wonder if ponoko could even cut these out for me. lexan would look cool but i know it is not always the best to work with.

it is posted here too http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4882

one more wall insulated

the other day i got some more insulation for my shed, i was able to finish the roof and one more wall is nearly done. i just have a few small things left to do on it. like put in a pipe so that i can bring my power in through it.
and patch up the insulation a little more.

there was a few bats of the pink insulation left in there so i thought i would just leave them in there for now.
i have the lights in the roof now, it has made id allot better to work in there now that i don't have to worry about that hot work light, and its short power chord

i need to take down that one bench still, i hope i can buy more wood soon at least it is allot cheaper than buying the insulation,

i also now have an idea on how i can get my repstrap working again i am going to try to move a few more things around on in and see if i cant improve the layout so that i cant get it working better. i hope the idea works i guess i will find out soon enough though.

i have also been thinking it may be a good idea to figure out a way to add in thermal safety into the extruder hot end. i have been noticing allot of posts about bad hot ends, so i wonder what could be done to make some sort of safety into it,  but i am starting so see the benifits of using 1/2 copper pipe too, that would solve allot of issues too.

shed and ideas

i am making progress on my shed still. i now have 3 lights wired up to a plug. in time i will wire a panel into it, so that all my lights and a power outlets will be done properly, but that will be after i get all the insulation and walls done. but what i have is now i nice start, seeing how i dont need to have my work light on now, it is allot nicer of a light in there now, not so bright in one spot, so that will make working allot nicer.

i will also start trying to build a few idea for my Z axis here in the next few days to see if they will work, but it would be allot less trouble if i had a drill press. it is getting to be very annoying difficult to build what i need without one. i am going to try using a 2x4 and putting 2 bearing in it, one at the top and bottom of it, that will give much better support for the threaded rod, but i will need to make sure it is straight now in order for that to work. any wobble in the rod and it will be very bad for printing. another thing i am looking into is copper pipe, if i can figure out how to mount bearings onto it. so i still have more work cut out for me. but i am getting there.

i will be starting to make a hard case design for my dso nano here soon, one so that i have storage for my probes in it, the one it comes with dose not have anything for its probes. i will post it on thingiverse when i get it done.

Pipe strap

i am starting to think i might try to build a pipe strap, or seeing if i cant build what i need from plumbing parts. it is a idea that i think can work for me. even if i just build the Z axis out of it and find a way to attach it to my current chassis. so i am going to have to work a little on this idea.

i have also been thinking about going to a dorkbot in regina to see if i cant find any more like minded people out there.

i am trying to see if i cant arrange a meet up with all the reprap people here in SK some time this dec, i hope i can do it. i would very much like to meet more people who are interested in this project so if you are in sk find me on the forums at reprap under canada and we can see what we can arrange.

i am getting a few more things done on my shead  whial i am waiting to get the money i need to order the parts for my repstap. i am still trying to figure out the best way to rebuild the part i need, i have a few ideas but i cant do much with them just yet, i need to find something or buy what i need, kinda wish i had the cash to just buy the frame and parts i need, but alas i dont, i will figure out something soon i hope...

but here are some fresh pics of my shed for now.

i got most of the one desk down now, and the shelf is down now too. i am also getting my wiring in now too, so that is nice to see, my breaker box is going to be to the right of the window.

i have more insulation in the roof now. i thought i was going to need 3 more for the roof but i was off and i will just need 2 of the 3 i ordered, so that will save me a little money.

more of the roof and the corner of the wall are done, tomorrow i will get the vapor barrier finished in the corner, and get the measurements i need so i can get the lumber yard to cut the plywood for me.

any one have any idea on what to do with an old cabletron router, wonder if i can hack anything else into it.

hmm design flaws

i got my pulleys and everyting i ordered this time around, but i discovered i have an issue with my threaded rod, and belt, i think one of them is bent, and that when i have the pully on them they are all very hard to turn at the same time. so i have decided to try to remake my Z axis. i know it is not the time in my build that i want to do that,
i dont think that belt is going to work too well it was a pain to get it on there. and no place to attach the stepper to it has well.

I have been thinking  about the best way to do it do i do it with a cantilever type of over hang like this
this is one way i thinking about doing it.

this is the other way i am thinking about doing with the 4 threaded rods, i was just too lazy to re build the platform to look right for this one right now.
i do like this idea a little more but i will have to see what i can build, right about now, i am just kinda wishing that i had the funds to just buy a kit and just be done with it but money is too tight for that right now. after xmas maybe. i will see. but i will be ordering a new operators super pack from maker gear with this next paycheck, i just dont have all the tools i need to make what i want just yet. but i can do it once i get printing  then i can mod to my hearts content.

but for now i just need to do what i can and with what i can, so let me know if any one out there has any good ideas. or tips,

in the next few days i am hoping to get the pulley's i ordered, i have to say thanks to nop.head for doing that for me so thank you, i am still trying to find or make a good stepper mount that will work for me. i dont think i will have much room for a belt tensioner but i wont know until i get the pulleys.

i am hoping to order a new hot end from makergear soon, with any luck it will be at the end of next week i can get some more money for it. but i also need to start to work on my print table again, i have the motor and pully i need for it already done but i do not have a printing bed or any form or rails for it setup right now, so i do know i have to work on that. i want to make it over to the local sign shop to see if they would have anything that will work for me, for now at least. but who knows.

i am also toying with the idea of designing a feed motor from the spool, kind like the up printer has. to me it seems like a good idea. but i will try to make it so that it is an analog circuit, it is just an idea that i am toying with for now to keep me busy. nothing major.

i am now getting the ply wood up where i can now, i still need to get more insulation but the store ran out of the stuff i am using, so i have to wait until they get more in.
here i have one piece short on the ply wood, but seeing how i still have allot more to do still i am still happy.

i am getting more of my wiring done now too. i think i am putting too many staples in there again i was always bad for doing that.

i have a piece behind the pegboard there now too, when i get the wall to the left done i will put up the board so that i can start using it.

i now have the bench off that wall, when i up it back up i will use this one has my computer desk. it will be lower and i will have my exhaust fan in the wall on this side too.  i do need to start thinking about my power here soon though.

but soon i am hoping to get a few more things done on my repstrap here soon, i will also be posting another item on thingiverse soon so i hope people will find it handy at least, but i am still having issues trying to do some things in google sketchup

Wednesday, November 3, 2010

well the other day i got my other shipment from ultimachine it was the belt i needed for my Z axis, i am still waiting on pulleys, but they will be here soon enough, so now i need to work on how to mount the stepper motor onto the pulley
it was allot bigger than i was thinking.

but over all it is going to be close i kinda wish it was about 15cm longer, that would have made it allot better for me. but i will find a way to make it work.

i have also started to work on a pwm circuit using a 555 timer, i thought it would be a nice tool to have around.

this Friday i will be getting a few more things done on my shed, so i hope i can start working in it some time soon,.

DSO nano V2 and some more work done on my shed today

well today i got some more work done on my shed, i need to get some more money for the rest of the insulation and wood.  but this is a really good start. i like what i am seeing now, and it is coming together well. i still need to figure out how to install a ventilation fan in it, so that i can solder in there with out any worries. but i am not finding some things i need to do that the way i would like to in the wall, but i now have my one desk in place where i would like it and it is now screwed to the wall. i hope to mount a small drill press there after xmas.

i also got my DSO Nano V2 from seed so far it seems easy to use, and very easy to read, i like it allot but i still have to use it some more. but so far i like it allot. i have not had much time to use it yet so i will post what i find later

it was smaller than i was thinking, though
